I know that I previously blogged that we would not be doing any remodeling this summer.
My plan is to start working on our next project in the fall when Joe is back in school
because it will keep me busy.
Our fall project is Bathroom/Electrical Maintence.
There are a couple parts:
1) Guest bathroom
Install New Light fixtures.
The light fixture we have we hate!! It is rusting and it just is too bright for how small the bathroom is.
Minor electrical changes
Currently has a 6 bulb fixture- we will be downgrading to a 4 bulb fixture.
I also plan on painting the bathroom after because it will probably need it.
2) Chandalier in the Hall Way
Install New
We hate it!
It matches nothing in our house.
Because it is so high up you need someone to either do it professionally or rent a special latter to do it.
Stay tunned for this project. We decided to do it ourselves
3) Master bathroom
Completely redo the mirrors and the lighting.
Right now we have a huge mirror and one light fixture.
With the suggestion of our neighbors we will be installing two smaller light fixtures (one over each of the sinks) and also placing two smaller mirrors.
Any thoughts?

Running thru life....Being a midwife
For anyone who follows my blog you know that I am a midwife.
Many people have misconceptions of what this is-
some people think I deliver at home or in a birth center,
some people think I only see pregnant women,
some people think all of my patients deliver naturally and can't get epidurals
some people think I have had no "formal schooling."
WRONG!!!!!!
So here I am to answer your questions:
First I am a nurse midwife meaning I spent 4 years (AT CLEMSON!!!)
to get my Bachelors of Science in Nursing, then was a Labor and Delivery ICU nurse,
and then went back to school at the Univeristy of Maryland to a 2 1/2 year program to
obtain my masters in Midwifery, did a mini residency, and then had to sit for my boards.
I deliver in a high risk hospital and work side by side with physicians, Maternal Fetal Medicine Doctors, and residents providing care to patients. I also see women who are not pregnant for their well woman care. I consider myself a medical midwife- I love working in a hospital setting and would not change that for the world.
The hospital I work at is an teaching hospital and after spending time as a nurse in a teaching hospital and a midwife in a private hospital- teaching hospitals are for me! I am constantly learning, constantly being challegened- I love it.
The patients I see in the clinic and on Labor and Delivery are low to high risk. I have patients who have had seizure disorders or patient with hypothyroism, hypertension, and patients who are as normal as normal can be. I have patients who request their epidural the minute they walk in and a handfull who want the natural childbirth experience. I am here to support them in what they would like (as long as there are no contraindictations).
I once had someone ask me "Do you really feel like you are a midwife delivering in a hospital?"
At first I was a little put off by this questions. But I gave it some thought and this was my answer.
"Midwife means with women- all women. Not just the healthy who can have homebirth or deliver at birth center. I like to think that I am here for the women who don't have those options."
That person was stunned by what I said and 8 months later I was fortunate to deliver her baby girl in the hand and knees position. At her postpartum visit she thanked me for doing what I do and was happy that she was able to deliver with a midwife in a hosptial setting (She had high blood pressure and could not deliver in a birth center).
Then people ask what I do each day...
My answer
1) See clinic patients both pregnant and not pregnant
2) Deliver babies
3) Round on postpartum patients
4) Work with the residents training new interns, etc.
5) Admin stuff like planning intern training, making the schedule for the midwives/nurse practioners, etc.
6) Attend academics and rounds
I do more in the first couple hours in my day than some people do all week.
To be honest I would be borded with anything else.
Being a midwife is amazing.
Do not get me wrong- I have days where I wonder if this is whats right for me.
This has been the case espeically over the last couple of months where I have had some particular physically and emotionally difficulty moments. Everyone thinks of birth as a wonderful experience, however not all end that way.
A couple of weeks ago I was reminded by a intern why I am where I am now.
I walked up to the Labor Deck and the resident looked at me and said "Are you here today?"
I answered "Yeap.. every Thursday."
"Awesome, we have a natural labor patient who is about to deliver and would love you!"
I grabbed the intern and headed in. ha ha ha
Over the next 30 minutes we delivered the baby, the placenta, etc.
The intern looked at me and said, "Now that was awesome, I have never done a birth like that!"
My answer... "yeah it was."
Yeap that is why I do what I do!!!

Running thru life....A Savings
Upon a recommendation from a friend I have starting looking out for coupons for Ulta.
Ultra carries the new hair conditioner that I am using.
That I am in love with mostly because my husband actually notices when I use it.

So I was excited to find in the Sunday paper the Ulta add
with the conditioner on sale for buy one get one half off
and a $3.50 coupon in addition.
I marched in Monday, picked up my conditioner normally $6 bucks each
and the matching shampoo which I have been wanting to try and exited with 1 conditioner, 1 shampoo and some makeup pads for less than $8 dollars =0)...

Running thru life...... It is worth waiting
Last April while in New York City with my Mom I found a purse that I absolutely in love with.
I have a weakness for purses and shoes.
Normally, I am given purses as gifts so to be honest I have not purchased a purse in 3+ years.

I have 4 purses that I use now and 2 wristlets.
4 might sound like alot to the average person but for me it is not. I rotate them alot depending on the season and also my outfits if I am in the mood. I currently have
1 black
1 brown
1 pink
and 1 white

However, I take good care of my purses so they last forever- most of them look like new.
This purse I found at Macy's I was crazy about because
1) it was big (i normally have small purses),
2) it could fit my then netbook, now ipad in it,
3) I loved the material and the look
4) and it was light in weight.
It was a Marc Fischer and I love Marc Fischer- I have three pairs of shoes by him and they are great!! However, at $90 I was torn. This was too much for me.
So I waited....
It went on sale at 40% off leaving it at $54 dollars.
Still a little bit more than I wanted to pay but I went to look at it and found out that I recieved and additional 15% off leaving it at $45. Then I whipped out an 20% coupon leaving it at $36 dollars.
Then wipped out a $10 gift card I have been saving.
$26 dollars later it was mine
Done and Done!!!!

I am in Love!!
I have used it for now 2 weeks and having been getting compliments on it left and right.
I even took it on our weekend trip to Florida-
I loved it because it fits my wallet, phone, magazines, and ipad.
It was perfect!!!

Running thru Life... Car Maintence
My husband know nothing about cars!!!
I love him but he is like a dumb blond when it comes to cars.
I can say this because I am a blond- more like a dirty blond when my hair is not colored- but a blond none the less. And I have a lot of dumb blond moments =0)
I do not know alot about cars but have picked things up over the years from my brother and my father who are obsessed with cars!
So I was very frustrated when my husband called me last week after taking his Mazda 2008 in for service stating that there was over $500 of work that needed to be done on it.
Of course I asked the following
1) What?
2) How bad is it?
Of course he did not ask those questions.
So he called the dealer back and they said it was not something that needed to be done now.
I then found out what the dealer was saying was wrong and called my brother (who is in to cars and also has a mazda). After a couple minutes on the phone I decided we are going to start looking for a new auto repair shop other than the dealer. The previous time we took it in they also found a lot of things wrong with it. The warranty is almost run out which means they are going to start racking up the bill every time we come it.
It does not make sense that my Mercedes Benz which is a 2003 is costing us less to maintain than the Mazda which is a 2008!!! Especially, considering that I am the one who drives my car hard since I work all the way in Bethesda and Joe works 10 miles from home if even that.
Furthermore, the place I take the Mercedes is a placed over in Dulles. I really have been happy with the service but it is quite a drive for us- to the point I am going to start looking for someone new to service the mercedes.
Any suggestions on an auto place that does Mazdas or Mercedes?

Running thru Life.... Tarara Winery Summer Concerts
Over three years ago Joe and I attended a Summer Concert at Tarara Winery.
After talking with some friends, we decided we should go again.
So 2 Saturday's ago we headed out with out coolers, blankets, and chairs.
The concert did not start until 6 pm but the gates opened at 5pm.
We got there at 5:30.
We each paid $15 dollars to get in.
We were allowed to bring in whatever we wanted except for alcohol.
We then found a spot in the shade and set up out blankets and headed off to the pavilion to purchase some wine. The previous time we went three years ago a tasting of all the wines was including with the entrance fee- this is not the case any longer which is sad. We were allowed to taste anything we were interested in buying so there being 4 of us and only 5 wines to choose from we each selected one and left the one expensive wine out of the picture. We shared the tastings with each other and quickly decided on what to purchase.
We headed back to our blankets to set up the picnic and listen to some music.
The band playing was Honor by August which actually was entertaining.
They reminded me alot of Pat McGee Band.
All and all it was a very plesant night with good music, good food, good wine and good friends.
